Closing the terahertz gap

Safely integrating ultrahigh frequency chips with laser technology

White dots on a geographic map are rare, in the electromagnetic spectrum there’s still much need for re-search and potential for technological progress. The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF relies on laser structuring with the LPKF ProtoLaser S for module integration of ultrahigh frequency chips.

Even for small batches: the 4-channel IF amplifier for 94 GHz radar modules is produced using the LPKF ProtoLaser S. Founded in 1957, the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF in Freiburg is a leading research and technology institute in the field of micro and nano-structured compound semiconductors and synthetic diamonds. It focuses on researching and developing micro and optoelectronic circuits, modules and systems with applications in safety and communications technology as well as environmental and medical technology. Today, 240 employees research current issues with high pertinence to society with an annual budget of 26 million Euros.
